One of the things I see all the time is people neglecting their own value. There are things they can do, but they are just leaving those things on the shelf. For example, I talk to people who have years of business experience but they don’t offer that to their clients. They’ve got professional degrees but they compete with amateurs. They have past experience in specific markets that they could use to guide their clients, but they aren’t in a position to offer that type of advice. All this value… just sitting on the shelf.

Do You Waste Your Time On Stuff That Barely Matters?

I say barely matters because there may be some value to this stuff, but most of the time it is just a series of roadblocks that prevent you from achieving the success you want. For example, blogging, posting to social media, and taking on cheap (or maybe even free) projects to build your portfolio. This is all stuff that will burn you out before you even get off the ground. Yes, clients can afford this. On average, a business should be reinvesting at least 10% of their gross revenue into marketing their business. In the video above I go into more of the details on how this all breaks down by industry, but a conservative estimate is to spend 10% of your gross revenue on marketing. So, that means any business that generates over $100,000 per year in gross revenue should be spending about $10,000 per year on marketing. This, not coincidentally, means about $850 per month. This means that virtually all businesses could (and should) afford your services provided that you’re able to generate results for them.

This is a very important mindset shift that needs to happen both in your mind and in the minds of your clients. In your mind, you need to believe that you’re worth it. You also have to show your clients why you’re worth it because they are most likely going to start with the belief that they already have and websites don’t work. This is obviously a false and limiting belief. So, you need to be prepared to help them see the truth.

What else can they spend their marketing budget on that will be more effective? A phone book listing? A radio ad? Hiring someone to dance in a stupid outfit flapping their arms as traffic drives by? Obviously working with you is far better than any of those outdated and ridiculous options. Do you believe that about yourself? You should because it’s true.
