I have the opportunity to speak to a lot of WordPress developers about how to grow their businesses and almost everyone talks about one or both of these issues. So, let’s dive in and figure out where those ideal clients really are. How do you hit the jackpot and win your ideal WordPress clients?
Where To Find A Hot Date
Have you ever been in a conversation with one of your single friends? They might be wallowing in self-pity wondering how in the world they are ever going to find a date. They just don’t know where to go to meet a good person. They can get so frustrated because the people they like don’t like them and the people they don’t like are the only ones who seem to be available. So, they pretty much bang their heads against the wall perplexed wondering where to go to find the right person. It’s as if there is this magical land where all the high-quality people hang out, but they just didn’t get the invitation. They are left out, alone, and feeling a little hopeless when it comes to scoring a hot date.
Of course, the truth is there is no such magical kingdom of awesome dates. In fact, awesome dates are walking all around. They are in grocery stores, gyms, roller coaster lines, movie theaters… even marinas (where I found the hottest date I’ve ever had – now my wife). In other words, they are everywhere.
Where To Find Your Ideal Clients
Just like there is no magical land of hot dates, there’s no mystical land of ideal clients either. Most of the time when people say they can’t find their ideal clients, they are expecting me to have a secret key – that nobody has ever seen before – the will unlock the door to the world of awesome clients. Like most myths, this is partially true. There is a key, but it doesn’t unlock a new location to find clients. The bottom line is that your clients are business owners. There aren’t but so many different ways you can meet business owners. There is no secret club of awesome clients, but there is a secret to attracting and connecting with your ideal clients. In other words, it’s not about WHERE you find them, it’s about HOW you connect with them.
Nobody Cares About You
This is as true in dating as it is in business. Think about going on a first date. When you meet someone and go on your first date, it may seem like the other person cares about you and wants to get to know you. But the reality is – for any serious date – the other person wants to know if you are going to be able to meet their needs and expectations. In other words, do you have what they are looking for? Their interest in you is to see if you are going to be a good fit for what they are looking for in a spouse. Of course, there are other factors at play as well, but if you start highlighting all your awesome skills and accomplishments, the other person is probably not going to be all that interested. In fact, it’s probably going to be a big turn off.
Most of us (unfortunately not all of us) pretty much understand that you don’t go on a date and talk about yourself the whole time. But when it comes to business, we through the entire concept right out the door. If you are a WordPress developer, take a look at your own website. Are you listing all of your skills and accomplishments? Do you think anybody cares about that? Are you still wondering why you’re having a hard time attracting your ideal clients?
OK, So What Now?
Now you’re probably seeing that you are about as likely to win a great client with a list of your technical skills as you are to attract your ideal spouse by talking about how much money you make, how awesome your job is, and how everybody wishes they were more like you. So, what are you supposed to do?
The answer is very similar to what we were talking about with going out on dates. The answer is to focus on building a relationship with the other person rather than boasting about your skills and accomplishments. It’s a skill that you develop that enables you to connect with people on a deeper, more meaningful level.
